The Challenge

Designingascenewheretheproductandtheenvironmentsharetheexactsamecolorpaletteisalwaysamassiverisk.Withoutcarefultreatment,thespeakerswouldcompletelybleedintothebluebackground,flatteningtheimageandlosingtheproduct'sdistinctsilhouettes.Furthermore,3Dfabricisnotoriouslydifficulttonail;ifthemicro-textureisn'tperfectlybalanced,itimmediatelyreadsasrigidplasticwithacheapnoisemapslappedoverit.

The Solution

Tocarvetheproductsoutofthematchingbackground,thelightingstrategyreliedonharsh,theatricaldirectionallightsanddeep,cinematicshadows.Ibuiltacustomfabricshadercompletewithmicroscopicproceduralfuzz,allowingtheaggressiverimlightstocatchtheindividualfibersandphysicallysellthesoftnessoftheacousticmesh.Tovisuallyrepresentthefeelingofsound,Iintegratedtactileenvironmentalinteractions—subtlesurfaceripplesandfloatingdustparticlesreactingtothelight,givingthespaceadense,atmosphericweight.

How we got there

Theproductmodeling,customfabricsurfacing,andparticlesimulationswerealldevelopednativelyinBlender.Ispentasignificantamountoftimedialinginthelightingratiostoensurethetopcontrolringsandthewoodenbasespoppedagainstthesoftfabricwithoutbreakingtheoverarchingmonochromaticaesthetic.TherenderedsequenceswerethenfinishedinDaVinciResolve,wherethefinalgradewaspushedtodeepentheblueshadowsandaddadelicatecinematicbloomtothefloatingparticlesandspecularhighlights.
